I’m Dan Mezick, President of New
Technology Solutions (North Haven, CT). I
started NewTech in 1993, invented
the VB BOOTCAMP™,
and delivered all the early NewTech training in the 1990's, which
I greatly enjoyed. We’ve trained over 60,000
developers since 1993, one class at a time.
I also enjoy
flying small aircraft,
mostly around New England.

In the 1990’s I ran a large VB user group in Connecticut
and wrote a lot of magazine articles on VB programming and so on.
I ran into this great guy
from Redmond who helped me get the VB user group started. Later
I went to the 1995 COMDEX to give a seminar on VB programming and
made a special trip to meet the guy from Redmond, who was also in
town. Later this same guy from Redmond came to Connecticut. He sat
me down and pitched this innovative, new developer training concept
he dreamed up, called ‘Developer Days’.
I ran the first Microsoft
Devdays in 1996, hosting 1 of 8 initial USA cities. I continued
with Microsoft Developer Days and ran that for about 7 years for
Microsoft as ‘Regional Director’ of Devdays in Hartford
and Boston.
I’m pretty lucky. Because I’m so darned lucky, I’ve
been quoted in loads of IT magazines over the years, magazines
like
CNET,
COMPUTERWORLD,
ZD
NET, eWEEK, INFORMATION
WEEK, and so on.
I’ve also been lucky enough to win
business awards like the Deloitte
and Touche Connecticut Technology FAST50 award. This is
awarded annually to the 50 fastest growing technology firms
in each state. NewTech won that one, in Connecticut, back-to-back
in
the years
2001 and 2002.
I greatly enjoy technology and business. I actively
seek angel
investing opportunities in promising tech startups. When
I do this I am actively involved in the technology stuff as
well as overall business model definition and execution.
I read a lot and I’m always thinking about things. As a
result, I get some darned lucky breaks. I was lucky enough to
be
awarded a patent in the 1990’s for some development tool
IDE ideas. You
can view patent # 5,872,974 here: it’s the “Property
setting manager for objects and controls of a graphical user
interface
software development system”. Since the issuance of that
patent, ALOT of Microsoft patents cite mine. Here is the Google
listing of that patent.
I’ve been lucky to have various book titles listed from
the 1990’s
on AMAZON.COM such as the VB
Certification Exam Guide. I do not really enjoy writing books,
unless there is a chance I can sell 1 million or more copies. Since
I’m lucky, in the future anything can happen.
After about 1999 I got very interested in the P2P nature of the
Internet. I saw open source phenomenon as something very significant
to study and observe. Since that time, I’ve formed some ideas
and posted them
on this web site. In 2001 I wrote Enter
Late and Dominate, which asserts my theorem of open source.
This went unnoticed for almost 3 years and
then all of a sudden in 2004 it got
a lot of attention.
“Enter Late” seems to be on its way as an influential,
popular essay on how (but not why) open source behaves in the
larger economic ecosystem.
See my ongoing writing on open source here.
Open source is a strange beast. I do not claim to completely understand
it. If you want to begin to understand it, reading Eric
Raymond’s stuff is a great entry point.
So there you have it. Contact
me personally if you have any questions about NewTech.
After 2005 or so, I got very interested in Agile and Scrum. You
can learn more about that here.
