Grace Period Over: The new reality of Visual Studio Development
Language Integrated Query (LINQ) in .NET3.5 signals a massive shift
away from simplicity and towards complexity in .NET development.
Now, .NET is never simple. It is deep and wide, and designed from the
start to be the best development platform, second to none, bar none.
So what you have with VS in any version is an ambition to be the best.
And that means wide (many aspects) and deep (ability
to have granular programmatic control).
But what we have here with LINQ is a sudden turn to the left, and towards
functional programming and meta programming.
These
are subjects usually reserved for operating systems
and compilers. Now we have them as the
unifying concept behind a first-class (“embedded in the language")
feature called LINQ.
I am pretty sure that LINQ is going
to penetrate very slowly into the consciousness
of developers. Why? LINQ is built on advanced features
from 1.0, 2.0 and 3.5. As such, the appearance
of LINQ in .NET3.5 signals that the “grace period” is
over for casual developers. They must “buck up” or be
left behind.
How so? Well, OK, just take a look at what LINQ is actually BUILT on:

Summary
The time for “surface level” understanding of hardcore
OOP, delegates, iterators, IEnumerable<T>, generic classes, generic
interfaces, and generic methods has passed.
These features are not even new .NET3.5 features. These are OLD features
from 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 that are now front and center
with LINQ. It’s
time to buck UP and face reality: .NET development
is getting more powerful, and therefore more demanding.
Time to get with it. If you wait till
.NET4.0, you are in serious trouble. Anders is
in control, and he is driving like a MANIAC and
taking this product towards complexity. All the new power
in VS2008 such as LINQ is allowing for some incredible
ways to write applications.
That power comes with
a cost, and the cost is understanding. Developers
are bifurcating into two levels: at the top,
you have those who really really understand it
all. Including the philosophy of design....this
is maybe 10% of the total population.
The next
level is the rest: the casual users and non-architects
that have no clue what LINQ is, or why they care.
Welcome to the new paradigm: .NET 3.5 with LINQ, and with Anders in
the drivers seat.
