GiveCamp is an great event that connects
developers and non-profit organizations. Over a single weekend,
developers
organize
around creating information systems for these non-profit companies.
Many of the projects are web sites but some are larger-scale
in scope and function.
An effort like GiveCamp requires serious
teamwork and a focus on goals to achieve the stated mission.
As such GiveCamp is a
perfect fit with Scrum-- Scrum can be used in the weekend timebox
to organize, manage and execute on teamwork in the building
of these systems.

Agile Boston is leading the effort to bring
Scrum to GiveCamp. If you choose to get involved, you can gain
valuable experience
that can help you achieve the Certified Scrum Professional
(CSP) credential from the Scrum Alliance. This, plus the opportunity
to do some real good in the world as you meet and connect with
people makes GiveCamp a great opportunity to get involved in
something big!
The date is June 12 and 13, 2010. Saturday
and Sunday.
Can you make it? You can learn more here:
GiveCamp national effort
From the site:
"GiveCamp is a weekend-long
event where software developers, designers, and database administrators
donate their time to create
custom software for non-profit organizations. The only limitation
is that the project should be scoped to be able to be completed
in a weekend.During GiveCamp, developers are welcome to go
home in the evenings or camp out all weekend long. Overall, it’s
a great opportunity for people to work together, developing
new friendships, and doing something important for their community....
"At
GiveCamp, there is an expectation of “What Happens
at GiveCamp, Stays at GiveCamp”. Therefore, all source
code must be turned over to the charities at the end of the
weekend (developers cannot ask for payment) and the charities
are responsible
for maintaining the code moving forward (charities cannot expect
the developers to maintain the codebase).

GiveCamp is similar to and is
inspired by the same good spirit as other good-works Scrum
projects, such as WelfareCSM.
Scrum Alliance CSP Credential info
The intent is to do some good in the world,
via GiveCamp, using Scrum as a lever to move the world just a
little bit.
Take a look and decide if this is for you.
Agile Boston is organizing the overall effort. This is a way
to practice
Scrum locally,
with local friends, gain more Scrum experience-- and do some
good. I encourage you to closely examine this opportunity and
consider getting involved. We need developers, coaches and
Scrum masters who can get creative as we apply Scrum to GiveCamp
in
Boston.
The larger goal is to create some Scrum experience
at GiveCamp that can be inspected, with the intent of rolling
out Scrum across
the ongoing, nationwide GiveCamp program, such that GiveCamp
can more fully accomplish its mission.
